Türkiye and Turkmenistan Sign Agreement for Gas Supply Starting March 1
Türkiye and Turkmenistan have signed a historic agreement to begin supplying Turkmen natural gas to Türkiye, starting March 1, as announced by Alparslan Bayraktar, Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, on Tuesday.
Bayraktar shared the news on social media, stating, “We took a historic step in Türkiye-Turkmenistan energy cooperation,” following the agreement between the Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS) and Turkmengaz, Turkmenistan’s state-owned gas company. The agreement aims to facilitate the delivery of Turkmen gas to Türkiye.
Strengthening Energy Cooperation
Bayraktar noted that the flow of gas is set to begin on March 1, calling the agreement a significant milestone in the ongoing natural gas cooperation between the two countries. He referred to this deal as the concrete outcome of a memorandum of understanding signed in March 2024, which laid the groundwork for further collaboration in the field of hydrocarbons. That initial pact was signed in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.
Securing Gas Supply and Strategic Cooperation
With this new agreement, Bayraktar emphasized that Türkiye’s natural gas supply security, as well as regional cooperation, would be strengthened. He added, “We will strengthen the natural gas supply security of our country and our region, while furthering the strategic cooperation between the two countries.”
During his visit to Turkmenistan last July, Bayraktar had announced a target to supply approximately 300 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas, with plans to deliver 15 bcm annually over the next 20 years. This agreement marks a key step toward achieving that goal and further solidifies the growing energy partnership between Türkiye and Turkmenistan.
