Streets of London showcase Turkish resistance to defeated 2016 coup

Türkiye also set to hold panel in London marking anniversary of country’s defeated 2016 coup attempt by Fetullah Terrorist Organization

In a striking display of commemoration, vehicles showcasing visuals and texts about the Turkish people’s resistance against the defeated July 15, 2016 coup attempt roamed the streets of London on Saturday. These LED screen vehicles captivated the attention of both locals and tourists as they navigated areas near state institutions, Parliament, and various historical and touristic landmarks, recounting the story of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization’s (FETO) coup attempt and the Turkish people’s successful struggle to thwart it.

Starting from the iconic Piccadilly Square, the vehicles made their way through notable locations such as Oxford Street, Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge, and Hyde Park. Prominently displayed on the vehicles were the phrases “Victory of Democracy” and “Heroes of the Century of Türkiye,” along with an award-winning photo taken by Anadolu photojournalist Elif Ozturk on Istanbul’s July 15 Martyrs Bridge.

Upcoming Panel in London

To further mark the anniversary of the defeated coup, Türkiye will hold a panel in London, organized by the state Communications Directorate. Set for next Monday, the panel titled “Türkiye’s Victory of Democracy” will feature addresses by Communications Director Fahrettin Altun, Turkish Ambassador to London Osman Karay Ertas, and Qurban Hussain, a member of the British House of Lords.

Background on the Coup Attempt

The coup attempt on July 15, 2016, resulted in 252 deaths and 2,734 injuries. It was orchestrated by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) and its US-based leader Fethullah Gulen. Gulen, residing in Pennsylvania, has been sought for extradition by Turkish leaders, but US judicial officials have not approved the request.
